Ingredient Spotlight: Peppermint Essential Oil

At Puro Co., we carefully select each ingredient we use in our products to serve a specific purpose. Each of the elements we use has properties that make it unique. An essential oil that we use often is peppermint.

Peppermint essential oil has excellent benefits, but it is also one that I often see overused and misused. A possible reason is that peppermint has been used for health purposes for several thousand years. Records from ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt mention its use for digestive disorders and other conditions. Often whole herb uses are applied to essential oil. Still, the distillation of essential oil only extracts light molecular weight compounds, so the chemical components of an herb and its essential oil differ. Also, peppermint essential oil is much more concentrated than the whole plant and must be used and treated differently.

These are some of the general uses and qualities of peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint

Mentha X piperita

Characteristics: yellow or greenish

Parts of Plants Used: leaves, parts of plants

Scent: grassy, minty, camphoraceous

Odor Intensity: high

Peppermint essential oil uses:

Topical - Peppermint essential oil is one of my favorite oils for tension headaches and migraines. The high menthol content provides a cooling effect, making it a beautiful addition to a roller ball blend or salve to be applied to the base of the neck or temples. For the same reason, a blend containing peppermint oil can be used for sore or stiff joints, and its analgesic effect may help to provide some temporary relief.

Undiluted peppermint essential oil often referred to as neat, should not be used.

Diffusion: The aroma of peppermint is promoted for coughs and colds, improving mental function, and reducing stress.

I always recommend using a diffuser for a short period of 15-30 mins an hour. Diffusers with a timer make this much more manageable. Do not use diffuse peppermint oil around pets or children. In this case, a personal inhaler would be a more suitable option.
